Apex Legend First Draft Complete

The next Legacy Universe book has its first draft. Honestly, this hasn’t been the easiest one to write. The end of Kandal Gothran’s journey is always going to be big, right?

The editing comes next. Then me actually being around the net some more, paying back some of the good will I get thrown my way. I hope the end of the Apex Soldier Sequence will make the wait worth it.

Thanks for the patience folks.

Apex Warrior (Book Two in The Apex Soldier Sequence) is Now Available!

AW_Cover_BIGBOOK

Here it is folks. Maybe just slightly behind schedule, although I imagine it was available shortly before midnight in the US. We don’t miss deadlines in the LU!

Apex Warrior is the second novel in The Apex Soldier Sequence and follows Kandal Gothran as his life continues into the military. This is the second part of a trilogy, and moves at a right good pace, if I do say so myself. Here’s the blurb:

Transformed. Battle hardened. But in order to build his legend, the Apex Soldier will have to become an APEX WARRIOR.

With his transformation into a physical equal complete, the newly powerful Kandal Gothran is thrown into formal military training. But when the war with Calecks escalates, there will be little time for preparation.

Joining the Black Platoon, each of the Apex Soldiers will have to battle their own demons as they come to terms with their new physical forms. If they can not, then the dangers which lurk over the border will soon terrorize not only them, but every inhabitant of Referi’s major cities.

Yet while the future of their home nation rests on their shoulders, it is the scientist Galetra Plor who will need to guarantee that the Apex Soldier programme doesn’t come undone. Now, as an aspiring politician, desperate times will call for clandestine deals.

Two different paths, two different purposes, but just one war. For Kandal Gothran, only the success of both can guarantee his legacy.

Hope you enjoy the book people. I’m going to be making a big start on the final part of this trilogy over the festive period, before sinking my teeth into Rosewell Book Four (finally, am I right?)

Apex Warrior Cover Reveal!

Literally got this today. The same day the book goes up. I know, it’s not tradition, but how awesome is this thing right? That’s Kandal Gothran, looking bad-ass.

Apex Warrior! December 17th! Fingers Crossed!

apexwarriorcov2[1]

Have been majorly inactive on here and Twitter for some time. Essentially, I’ve been writing and working on Apex Warrior, trying to turn it around before the new year. It’s gone well, and although the deadline is tight, I’m expecting to be able to do a Monday release again – 17th December, just in time for Christmas.

It’s safe to say that the number of new LU readers has slowed in the last couple of months while I’ve been a hermit. To celebrate the new release, Apex Soldier will be free for a couple of days. It’s the first time it ever has been, so it’d be great if you could let people know and, if you’ve been unsure about wandering away from Maur and Co, it would be the best time to start on this other series.

Originally I’d said that it would be Rosewell Sequence 4 after Apex Warrior, but having brought Kandal Gothran to this point, I feel like I need to finish it. Therefore, I’m intending to close out the trilogy in Q1 of 2013. With having some time off, the plan would be to be able to do this as early as February. Wouldn’t that be cool?

Thanks again to all the people who continue to check in on this site. There will be new Apex Soldier merch and a fantastic cover to reveal soon! Look above to see a prelim sketch!

Next Book and Rosewell Sequence Four

Update time!

I start writing Apex Warrior tomorrow with an intended December release. Good news!

Then it’s Rosewell Sequence Four, aiming for March on that one. Double good news?

Bad news? You still gotta wait for either.

Prologue

Calthera found herself sprinting, chased by the thunderous booms of bombing rounds fired across the Front. The explosions were not on her heels. Instead, they were outside the mobile facility, crashing all around while she dashed, searching for answers. Cursing, she was desperately trying to position all of the troops outside, hoping to keep some of them, as many as she could, alive. The platoon had been ambushed as it moved along the Front, encountering a barricade of Maltrastan military equipment too far away to see, but close enough to fire upon them.

“We’d need a hundred more armoured vehicles to get across the Front with enough women to sabotage those vehicles. Even then we’d likely lack the infantry!”

“We never have enough infantry!” Calthera barked in reply to the resource co-ordinator, who was speaking but doing very little else. “There aren’t enough women born in Referi to end this stupid conflict. There’s just enough to keep it going. That’s all we do! We fuel the fires and everybody else tries to pretend that this isn’t happening. We’re stuck here!”

“This is hardly the time!” replied the commanding officer within the facility.

Silenced, Calthera returned to the work she had hastily assembled. She was searching panel screens which glittered, marking out the nearby barren terrain, refusing the numerous suggested routes of retreat or attack as all too costly.

“We can’t do this without losing most of our people. There’s nowhere to go that isn’t within range.”

Her commander was enraged. “It won’t be long until the mobile units are all hit! The shots will take out anybody hiding beneath their wings. You are running out of time Calthera Yanni. Either you give me a route, or I order a frontal attack!”

Calthera slammed her fists down onto the panels, screaming openly into the air. There was nothing she could offer that wasn’t likely to cause the same loss of life.

“Wait!” she said, her eyes darting down to one of the panels which had escaped her wrath. “I think I have it!”

As her last word was spoken, the thunder caught up with Calthera. A shell, fired by a distant soldier pressing a distant button, flew through the sky, whistling gleefully as it followed its path. It broke through the black smoke of the battlefield, then into the brighter, white clouds above, before arcing back down. The shell cut the white and the black, and then through the crackling fragments of fire rising from the ground. It landed next to the mobile facility that housed Calthera, flipping it up into the air.

She was not awake to feel her stomach churn as the facility was thrown up onto a high mound.

Her consciousness was only regained when her commander shook her awake. Many of the lights within the facility were out, and others were flickering. They played against the screens of the sparkling panels scattered amongst other debris. Calthera felt numb, yet expected pain after a first glance at the scene around her.

“I… I…”

“Now, there’s no need to speak,” said the commander. Her harsh, haggard face, long since robbed of its youthful beauty by war, was smeared filthy with black soot and the evidence of burns.

“I… want Kandal,” Calthera said, struggling. To say his name brought her some happiness and good memories. It was enough for her to try and push her body up, but the sight of a long, twisted piece of shrapnel through her gut stalled the attempt.

“Kandal? He’s your partner? There are no men here, Calthera.”

“Why? Why can’t we have them here?”

“Because that’s not how our world works,” replied her commander, running a hand across Calthera’s face to try and comfort. “They couldn’t stop this happening.”

“I wanted to bring him with me. He would have liked it, except for the bad parts.”

This caused the commander to laugh. “And what are the good parts?”

“We might have had some if he had been here,” Calthera said, letting herself smile.

“He wouldn’t have lasted long, dear Calthera. Too weak. They all are.”

Calthera’s smile transformed from weak grin into a beaming, toothy glow.

“You know, commander, I think I’ll get my way. I think that’s all about to change. Women will be able to bring their men to these battlefields. We won’t have to die without them.”

“If you say so, Calthera. If you say so.”

The commanders words were too late coming. Calthera was dead.

APEX SOLDIER, Book One in The Apex Soldier Sequence, will release on July 30th 2012. Check back here on Monday for links to the Amazon book pages!

Apex Soldier Release Date Announced and Cover Revealed

THE LEGACY UNIVERSE EXPANDS ON JULY 30th – APEX SOLDIER RELEASE DATE ANNOUNCED AND COVER REVEALED

24th July 2012 - The Legacy Universe, described as having “heart-pounding adventure” and being a “highly detailed new universe”, already offers readers a great selection of science fiction eBooks. Whether with its bundle of shorts stories, or the first three published parts of the epic ROSEWELL SEQUENCE, the Legacy Universe is quickly becoming a must-visit destination for science fiction fans.

However, where ROSEWELL SEQUENCE books like GENTLE REMINDERS and LESSONS LEARNED tell the story of the Jump Cannon and her crew, the “LU” was always intended to be a place where hundreds of different tales could be told.

On July 30th, the first part of that expansion will unfold. You’ve already been taken to far flung worlds. You’ve already fought against the Free Man Nation on the frontlines of the ROSEWELL SEQUENCE. Now, the APEX SOLDIER SEQUENCE begins, and tells a completely new story.

APEX SOLDIER, the first book of a trilogy, will release on July 30th, and marks a new high point for the Legacy Universe. Taking place hundreds of years before the events of the ROSEWELL SEQUENCE, and with a completely different focus, the book looks at the world of Pura. This distant planet has always been a female dominated society, and readers will explore what that means for the planet’s politics, war and economy, but also what it means for Pura’s men.

The book tracks the implementation of the Apex Soldier programme – a bold scientific experiment to transform men from their existing weakness and servitude, into capable, powerful soldiers. Scientists of the Ansan Bodily Enhancement Cluster, or AnBEC, have been tirelessly working on the project, but the threat of their nation being swallowed be another could mean it has all been for nothing.

When puran man Kandal Gothran is cast into mourning following the death of his partner on the Maltrasta Front, Narliana Surn and her band of scientists will seek to change his fortunes and those of all men forever. However, the absorption of their home nation, Referi, into one of her neighbours looms, and bold dreams of male equality may be lost in the search for military power and profit. In the end, Kandal could find himself fighting, but against real soldiers rather than old prejudice.

The APEX SOLDIER SEQUENCE marks the first huge expansion of the Legacy Universe canon, and you can read exactly how the future of Pura was formed come July 30th 2012. Written by Legacy Universe architect MARTIN PERRY, you can get in touch and count down the final days before release by following him on twitter, @LegacyUniverse.

ABOUT LEGACY UNIVERSE

The Legacy Universe is a limitless setting for science fiction stories. Like the Star Wars Expanded Universe, or the hugely successful Warhammer 40K books, the Legacy Universe offers readers the opportunity to explore a deeply diverse setting through multiple narratives. The series has been described as having characters with “depth and believability”, and bridges the gap between space opera and more character led narratives. SFBook.com, speaking of GENTLE REMINDERS, that the Legacy Universe was “just teeming with a myriad of different species” and offered “above all a great deal of fun”.

Apex Soldier is Nearly Complete

Taking a very quick break to do an update. Apex Soldier, the first book in The Apex Soldier Sequence, is nearly complete. I’m sitting working on the last chapter as we speak!

The story focuses on puran society some time before the events of The Rosewell Sequence. It’s a more grounded story, that explores female dominated puran society, its politics and culture, but also the rebirth of men as the Apex Soldiers you may remember from LESSONS LEARNED and PURE MEMORIALS – Elrik is an Apex Soldier, remember?

This series is intended to be three books long (I think they call it a trilogy!) and you’ll find it’s a bit punchier than the Rosewell epics. I wanted to do something that felt fresh and different, while still exploring some themes that are important to the LU. Hopefully I’ve done just that!

One of the LURC members is going to be giving it a read over before release, and if that’s not you and you’d like to, just drop me an email at the usual place – martin@legacy-universe.com

Cover designs and all that good stuff will follow! Back to work!
